I can't tell if it's methane or something worse. It's making my throat burn and my eyes water and she has the SMUGGEST look on her face. She loves this new food so much that I've had to warn her that I look after cats, not kegs.
Farts are typically methane, so. I can't imagine a cat's digestive tract producing ACTUAL tear gas... though there might be some sulfur compounds, actually, and those would produce the effects you're describing. Like onions do. Cats can't have onions or garlic, it makes them ill (blood thinning effects I think) but there are certainly other foodstuffs with sulfur content. Might be an interesting exercise to look up the ingredients on the label and learn their chemical composition, but for practical help, I suggest lighting a few candles -- they don't even have to be scented, it's that the flame burns off the compounds, this is why it's easier to chop onions if you have a gas burner turned on or if you light a candle while you're chopping -- and'or using a fan and an open window to dissipate the stuff.
In my house the air quality warning about methane usually applies to me. My digestive system is more sensitive than my housemate's or my kid's. :-/
