I grew up around them. My grandparents still proudly wear the uniform. I view them as a cult, but the fact is so many people see them as this benevolent force for good.
There's a Salvation Army place a few minutes away from me and theres so many of them always wandering around in those uniforms putting leaflets through peoples doors asking you to join them or for money. -_- They used to knock on doors and try to speak to people too but they don't seem to do that as often these days. They've always been nothing more than an annoyance to me so now I have even more reason to dislike them.
They've put huge amounts of money into anti-gay and anti-choice campaigns all over the world, not to mention that their missionaries force people to convert in order to be fed or given medical care. They are corrupt right to the core.
That just reminded me of something that happened recently. We have a number of big thrift stores in town but we happened to be nearby the Salvation Army store when we remembered the bags of old clothing in the back so we stopped there to donate them. The guy (actually the director I discovered) told us they were full of clothing and to take them to the dump. The dump! We opted to donate them to one of the other thrift stores instead.
What the hell? The dump? This city isn't that big. I know he knows about the others. (Two main ones and one small one that I know of; could be more small ones that that I don't know about.)
